I would like to suggest that it would be a good idea to not only have local currency.
Example: if a U.S. prepper, include in your stash a modest amount of Canadian currency, Mexican currency, at least one European currency (probably Euros), and currency for any country for which you have a passport or family members.

Re: Cash on hand
Any recommendations for how to go about doing that?

Re: Cash on hand
Most banks where I live keep a limited amount of a few foreign currencies on hand. For one vacation I took, they didn't have enough and they ordered it for me to pick up at a later date.
Edited to add:
Also, whenever I go to another country on vacation I always make sure I'm bringing back some of their currency. Enough that I wouldn't be stranded if I had to go in an emergency and they couldn't take my credit/debit cards.
